Mark Chapin - Eagle County Assessor

A word from our County Assessor's Office

October 2009:  This is budget time for many local taxing authorities.  Each property owner in Eagle County pays tax to various authorities when property tax bills are issued in January of next year.  The basis of property tax for 2009, payable in 2010, is the value established based on the appraisal date of June 30, 2008.

Property taxes are determined by the  82  taxing entities in Eagle County.  The school districts command the greatest amount of tax revenue, followed by metropolitan districts, water, sanitation, fire protection, county, cities and other various taxing authorities. It is up to these various taxing entities to determine what property tax is paid by the property owners within the boundaries of their respective taxing areas. For reference a property owner can look at past tax bills to determine to which entities they pay taxes.

Most entities meet in the fall to discuss their individual budgets for the next tax year.  This is a good time for citizens to get involved to better understand and have input on the budgets that will directly impact their tax bills.

I have included a list of all taxing entities within Eagle County and contact information for each so you can ascertain when their various public hearings will be held.

Now is the time to get involved with the budget process and the property tax you will pay in 2010.
